The Raufarhólshellir lava tube is one of the biggest ones in Iceland, about 1,360m long ((4500 ft), 10-30m wide and up to 10m high. The average thickness of the ceiling is about 12 meters. The lava tube ceiling has caved in near the entrance, which creates beautiful columns of light.
Once we get into the cave, we will witness the inner workings of a volcanic eruption which flowed during the Leitahraun eruption, an eruption which occurred east of the Bláfjöll mountains about 5200 years ago.
The fantastic range of colours of the tunnel wall is caused by the different mineral types of the rock, from the reds, oranges and purples in the rocks, to the blue of the ice stalagmites.
Every winter spectacular ice sculptures are formed inside the entrance of the cave making the experience of visiting the lava tunnel even more breathtaking.
This is a tour for the senses. Experience a new world, hear the talk of the cave and sense the forces of nature like you have never done before. Learn new things and step out of your comfort zone. Scenes from the Hollywood movie Noah, with Anthony Hopkins, were shot in this lava cave.
